OUR STORY

We know what you're going to ask and we know why you clicked on our story. The name... what’s that all about?

Have a seat and let us tell you. It all began a long, long time ago in a land far, far away… sorry, we couldn't help it. The story is pretty simple.

We don’t totally remember which came first-- Dove and Donkey or Tardy Donkey (but it’s a solid guess that Tardy came second). The idea began when my daughter came home wearing an embroidered sweatshirt day after day, and I thought, “We can do better.” And so began the search for unique details that could elevate the basic pieces we wear everyday-- literally, every day (#2020).

This brings us to the name-- Tardy Donkey. We collected vintage elements from decades we mostly missed out on. As for the Donkey, they may be asses but they get the job done (even if it’s not on time).

Oh, and about our signature five x’s? We left space for you to make your mark. You’re welcome.

WHAT WE’RE MADE OF

vintage French laundry tape

We love these French laundry labels from the 40’s. Can  you guess what they were used for? You got it -  identifying your laundry by your initials or a specific number. We repurposed these long-forgotten laundry tapes in our tees and hoodies, giving each one a unique identifier and a link to the past. The colors are so very French and the original boxes they were packaged in are just as special.

baby alpaca wool

Why alpaca? Alpacas are curious, social and (we think) adorable. Their fleece is renewable, sustainable, and eco-friendly. They are also gentle on the environment- they only eat the tops of the grass, and their softly padded hooves have little impact on the land. Alpaca fleece is hypoallergenic, resistant to breaking and pilling, and a great insulator. It’s pretty soft too!

woven labels

If some of our patches are reminiscent of paintings you’ve seen before, you definitely paid attention during that art history class. Our woven labels are reproductions of a reproduction - repro squared, we guess. The original vintage silk woven labels from Warner Woven Labels date from the 50’s through the 70’s. Depicting famous paintings, each one adorned a calendar, which were given to loyal customers as a thank you. We make clothes and not calendars, so consider this our take.
